An Update on Rivers Crisis: A Court Decision Prevents Amaewhule and 24 others from Acting as Lawmakers

A recent ruling from the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has prohibited the Speaker, Martin Chile Amaewhule, and 24 other legislators from representing themselves as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

This action follows the defection of Amaewhule and his colleagues from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the platform on which they were elected.

In a case with the file number PHC/1512/CS/2024, Justice Charles N. Wali issued the directive in response to a suit brought by Victor Oko Jumbo, the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, along with two lawmakers, Sokari Goodboy and Orubienimigha Timothy. The suit named Amaewhule, the Governor of Rivers State, the state’s Attorney General, and the Chief Judge of the state as respondents.
