Ambitious Target Set by Mutuwa for Paris Olympics

Aspirational Nigerian wrestler, Ashton Mutuwa, expressed his determination to excel beyond his performance at the recent 2023 African Games in Ghana, emphasizing his quest to secure a medal at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.

Opting to represent Nigeria at the African Games in Ghana marked Mutuwa’s debut in the prestigious event, despite having predominantly pursued his wrestling career in the United States.

Against all odds, the wrestler currently based in America clinched a silver medal at the tournament. Furthermore, he secured a coveted spot in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games following a commendable performance in the men’s 125kg freestyle event at the African and Oceania Qualifiers held in Alexandria, Egypt in March.

Expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from his teammates, coaches, and the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Mutuwa aspires to etch his name among the revered list of Nigerian athletes who have earned Olympic medals.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Nigerians for the overwhelming support I have received thus far,” Mutuwa disclosed in a statement shared by the Nigeria Wrestling Federation.

“I appreciate Daniel Igali and the NWF board for granting me the opportunity to compete and represent Nigeria. Daniel Igali played a pivotal role in both coaching and guiding me to this level of excellence.

“A special acknowledgment goes to my coach Victor Kodei and my teammates Harrison, Stephen, Simeon, and Braveman. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in my journey,” he added.

“The prospect of representing my nation in Paris fills me with great excitement. While the journey is far from over, my aim is to secure a medal at the Games. Nevertheless, I believe our achievements thus far deserve recognition and celebration,” Mutuwa concluded.
