Almost 300 million people suffer acute hunger in the world

Hunger affects more than 295 million people in 53 countries and territories. They suppose 13.7 million more people in a situation of acute food insecurity that a year ago and an increase in famine for the sixth consecutive year.

They are data from Global Food Crisis Report 2024which reflect a drastic rebound fruit – especially – of open conflicts in the world such as that of Sudan – already in an official situation of famine, Haiti or Mali.

The UN report emphasizes specifically in the increase in food insecurity between the displaced population, with 95 of the 128 million internal displaced, asylum seekers and refugees suffering serious deficiencies. And as for childhood, Nearly 38 million children under 5 years are suffering from acute hunger in the world.

The catastrophe state – as the worst variable of hunger is known – has shot up to 1.9 million cases, more than double than in 2023 and record figure since the registration began in 2016.

The United Nations Secretary of Nations António Guterres says Hunger in the 21st century “is indefensible”. “We cannot respond to empty stomachs with empty hands and turned backs”warns Guterres, fearful of the effects that the shortage of funds can lead to.
