New tragic event in Türkiye. A serious shooting shook an educational center this Wednesday in the province of Kahramanmaraş, in southern Turkey, where a 14-year-old student opened fire on students and teachers, leaving at least four dead and around twenty injured.
According to local authorities, among the fatalities are three minors and a teacher. In addition, several of the injured remain in critical condition, leading to fears that the death toll may increase in the coming hours.
The attacker, who was in eighth grade at the same center, armed into at least two classrooms where there were younger students, between 10 and 11 years old, and began shooting indiscriminately. After the attack, the young man committed suicide in the midst of chaos.
The first investigations indicate that the minor used several firearms belonging to his father, a former member of the security forces, which has revived the debate about access to weapons in the family environment.
The second shooting in two days
The event has generated a strong commotion throughout the country, especially because it is the second shooting in educational centers in less than 48 hours. Yesterday, Wednesday, April 14, another shooter opened fire at a school in the province of Sanliurfala, leaving at least 16 people injured.
The Turkish Government has announced the opening of an exhaustive investigation and has sent senior officials to the area to clarify the facts and reinforce security in the schools. Meanwhile, families and the educational community remain in a state of shock at an unusual tragedy in the country.
