The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has once again won elections in the country, this time in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where it obtained 37% of the votes, 20 points more than in the previous elections.
AdF has described it as a “sensational result” and considers that they have “clearly a mandate to govern” and has expressed its willingness to “dialogue with all parties”, in the words of its co-leader Tino Chrupalla.
The second force in the area is the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) with 35.5% of the votes, while the third political force, The Left, achieves 7.5% support, 2.4 points less, and the Greens would obtain 5.5%, 0.8 points less. The CDU, Chancellor Merz’s party, obtains 5.5%, 7.8 points less, and BSW is again at the limit with 5%.
In Berlin, the Left emerges victorious
Elections have also been held in Berlin, where The Left doubles its support with respect to the 2023 elections by obtaining 24.5 of the votes and surpassing the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which until now governed in coalition with the historic German Social Democratic Party (SPD), which is the fifth political force with 12%. In third place would be the AfD (16%) and in fourth place, the Greens (15%).
The Left candidate, Elif Eralp, has recalled one of her main electoral promises: affordable housing. “From today we are going to change Berlin together,” he stressed. The good result of the AfD in Berlin stands out, the best in its history, and which coincides with an increase in participation, which was 58.5%, well above the 48.8% in 2023.
