“Don’t fall asleep”: this was the plea a team of Mexican rescuers made to an 11-year-old boy, exhausted under the rubble after the double earthquake in Venezuela. The minor remained trapped more than 72 hours after the tragic event that shook the country.
The team managed to get the boy out alive four days after the earthquakes occurred in La Guaira, the most affected state, while other rescuers from more countries continue the search for more lives under the destroyed buildings.
The scene drawn by the rescue teams is that of buildings collapsed, burned, uninhabitable and evacuated due to the destruction of the earthquake. The Government of Venezuela has reported that there are almost 1,500 dead and 3,150 injured.
The UME, in Venezuela to help in rescue efforts
The UME, displaced to Venezuela, continues trying to save the maximum possible number of human lives with the contribution of two liaison officers who collaborate in coordination with the rest of the countries to bring the necessary tools and equipment to the places where it is most necessary.
In the last few hours, the president in charge of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, has confirmed progress in the recovery of the electricity and water supply networks, in addition to the roads. As for school activity, it will remain suspended at least until next July 5.
