The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has once again attacked Spain in a meeting with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, in which he expressed his “disappointment” with other countries of the Alliance for their lack of support in the war against Iran.
“We were disappointed with Italy, the United Kingdom, with Germany and France, with Spain (…) Spain is a real disaster. Spain is terrible (…) They don’t want to pay anything. They think they are going to get their way. Spain is not a good team, not at all. But I have great respect for this man,” he said in the presence of Rutte, statements he made from the White House.
“They don’t want to pay anything; they believe that everything will be free. Spain is not a good group, it is not a good group at all,” added the president.
This is not the first time that Trump has spoken out against Spain, specifically over the decision of Pedro Sánchez’s Executive to not allow the use of US military facilities on Spanish soil to attack Iran and his opposition to raising defense spending to 5% of GDP.
Rutte praises Trump’s progress in Iran
For his part, the Secretary General of NATO has stressed “how important” what the United States has achieved with Iran. “This is, above all, the nuclear capacity that Iran was about to acquire and which would have posed a threat to the region. It would have been a threat to the entire world,” he warned.
“The fact that that nuclear capacity has been diminished is extremely important. And I just want to make it clear because sometimes people wonder: why has this whole Iran thing dragged on for so long? It’s about security, about protection. It’s about the leader of the free world assuming a responsibility beyond the borders of the United States, for the good of the rest of the world. And that’s what you’ve done,” he said, addressing the American president.
