Just hours after the signing of the peace agreement between the United States and Iran to end more than three months of regional conflict, Israel has carried out a deadly attack in southern Lebanon that threatens to destabilize the fragile truce reached by Washington and Tehran.
According to regional media and local agencies, an Israeli drone has attacked a vehicle in the vicinity of Kfar Tebnint, in the Lebanese district of Nabatiyé, causing at least one fatality. This is the first lethal attack attributed to Israel in Lebanese territory after the entry into force of the agreement between the United States and Iran.
The pact signed between Washington and Tehran contemplates the cessation of military operations on several fronts in the Middle East, including Lebanon, as well as a commitment to reduce tensions and negotiations for a definitive agreement in the next 60 days.
However, the Israeli Government has shown its rejection of several aspects of the understanding reached by the US administration with Iran. Israeli political and military sectors consider that the agreement grants excessive advantages to Tehran and does not guarantee the dismantling of its strategic capabilities or the neutralization of its regional allies, especially Hezbollah.
Tension in Lebanon
The offensive occurs in a particularly delicate context. Days earlier, Israel had already bombed positions linked to Hezbollah in the southern suburbs of Beirut, causing deaths and injuries, while negotiations between the United States and Iran were in their final phase.
International analysts warn that these attacks could jeopardize the implementation of the agreement and fuel new tensions between Washington and Jerusalem. Iran has insisted that stability in Lebanon is a fundamental condition for consolidating regional peace, while Hezbollah has maintained its support for the diplomatic process, although it has warned that it will respond to future Israeli aggression.
At the moment, neither the United States nor Iran have announced concrete measures in response to the attack. However, the Israeli action shows the difficulties that the new agreement will face in translating into lasting peace in a region where multiple actors maintain competing interests and objectives.
