The European Parliament has asked this Thursday that the European Union suspend political dialogue and cooperation with Cuba if the island’s Government does not take “concrete and significant steps” towards a democratic transition and release “immediately and unconditionally the nearly 1,300 political prisoners.”
The text condemns the “systematic repression of the Cuban regime”
With 283 votes in favor, 199 against and 85 abstentions, the European People’s Party, the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) and the liberals of Renew Europe managed to push forward a text that “condemns in the strongest possible terms the systematic repression carried out by the Cuban regime.”
In particular, “torture, sexual violence, death threats, forced malnutrition, mass surveillance, forced labor and judicial persecution inflicted on political prisoners, protesters, dissidents, students, religious leaders and human rights defenders.”
