The United States and Iran have reached an agreement that will be ratified on Friday in a ceremony in Switzerland, as announced by both powers and Pakistan, the country that has acted as mediator. However, the details of the agreement have not been made public, so it is not clear what points it contains.
However, Professor Pedro Rodríguez has warned in The Compass that in reality what is happening is “a trompe l’oeil, an agreement to prolong the current truce between the United States and Iran, returning to the starting point.” In his opinion, the reason for not explaining the details until Friday itself is because there are two possibilities.
According to Rodríguez, there are two possible scenarios: “Either an unconditional surrender and enormous advantages on the part of the United States and enormous advantages for Iran. Or the implosion of the international leadership of the United States,” in any case, he stated, “everything indicates that it is not a good agreement.”
What does it mean to go back to square one?
Returning to the starting box has its explanation. We must go back to the beginning of the conflict, the “enormous geopolitical pulse between Iran and Saudi Arabia” within Islam, with the religious schism between the Shiites and Sunnis. The professor has even gone further because, despite the euphoria of US President Donald Trump for having signed peace, “it is not an agreement that justifies three months of hostilities, 7,000 deaths, disrupting the international economy and empowering the ayatollahs,” he criticized.
None of the objectives set by Trump have been met – ending the Iranian nuclear program, changing the regime, freeing the people of Iran… – but the reality is that “the regime in Tehran is much stronger.” Specifically, regarding the Iranian program, not only is there no progress, but “half a ton of candy-enriched uranium” is still there.
