Yobe community invaded by suspected herdsmen, resulting in one fatality and displacement of numerous residents

Reports indicate that one person has been killed and many others displaced following an invasion by suspected herdsmen in Gurjaji village, located in the Fika local government area of Yobe State.

According to information received, the attackers entered the community in the early hours of Tuesday armed with bows and arrows, shooting and setting houses and shops on fire.

This distressing situation compelled numerous residents to seek refuge in nearby villages for their safety.

Dr. Mohammed Goje, the Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), confirmed the incident through a post on his verified Facebook page.

“Based on our assessment, a total of 146 households, comprising over a thousand individuals including pregnant and lactating mothers, children, persons with disabilities, and elderly individuals, have been affected and displaced to neighboring communities such as Maluri, Garin Ari, Dibbol, Bulaburin, and Fika,” he stated.

He also mentioned, “Over 89% of the community was demolished and destroyed, resulting in the destruction of properties worth millions of Naira.”

“Regrettably, one person, a 50-year-old deaf man, was fatally shot with an arrow in his chest, while another individual sustained a serious injury,” he added.

He further explained that, in line with the directive from Governor Buni, SEMA is currently intensifying efforts to provide support to the victims, while also working on relocation and reintegration processes.
