Yakubu Gowon: Boko Haram a Significant Threat to Nigeria’s Stability Since Civil War

During the launch of two books authored by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Russia, Professor Abdullahi Y. Shehu, former Military Head of State Yakubu Gowon highlighted Boko Haram as a major threat to Nigeria’s stability post-civil war.

Gowon emphasized the significant challenges posed by Boko Haram in Nigeria, stressing the need to address its impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Gowon remarked, “Boko Haram has emerged as a formidable threat following the Civil War, creating a serious obstacle to peace and progress in our country.”

He further expressed his hope to avoid a recurrence of past turmoil, stating, “After the Civil War, I expressed my desire that the nation would not endure similar tribulations, but unfortunately, Boko Haram emerged.”

Gowon emphasized the importance of comprehending the repercussions of Boko Haram to effectively tackle the issue and devise innovative solutions.

He added, “Understanding the grave consequences of insurgency is crucial in formulating strategies to combat the challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, farmer-herder conflicts, and various forms of violent unrest plaguing Nigeria.”
