Woman ordered to pay $200k for damaging ex-boyfriend’s reputation on Instagram after their relationship ended

A significant amount of $200,000 has been ordered to be paid by a Canadian woman to her ex-boyfriend. She was found guilty of damaging his reputation on various social media platforms, including Instagram.

The case was presented by Brandon Rook against his ex-girlfriend, Noelle Halcrow. This occurred after Halcrow continuously attacked him online following the on-and-off end of their relationship in August 2016.

Halcrow’s actions involved creating multiple defamatory posts about Rook for a year, which accused him of being a drunk, a cheater, and having various STDs. She also sent threatening text messages to Rook, stating that she would create new derogatory posts should he ask for the removal of the existing ones.

During the hearing, Halcrow denied creating the fake profile and making the defamatory posts about her ex-boyfriend. However, Justice Elliot Myers refuted her claim, citing substantial evidence against Halcrow. This evidence included IP address matching and a writing style similar to hers found in the creation of various social media accounts.

In his judgment, Justice Elliot Myers awarded $175,000 to Rook for damages, along with an additional $25,000 in aggravated damages. Rook was also granted $38,000 for the expenses incurred in hiring reputation consultants to remove the defamatory posts from social media.

Despite the case being closed in September 2019, it only became public last week, as reported by The Hollywood Unlocked.
