According to Lagos FRSC, 111 road crashes and 17 deaths were registered in three months

In the initial quarter of 2024, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lagos State Command documented 111 Road Traffic Crashes (RTC).

Babatunde Farinloye, the Sector Commander, made this revelation during a press briefing held in Lagos on Tuesday.

Within the period under review, a total of 535 individuals were involved in these road accidents, with 17 fatalities reported.

Farinloye noted, “We had a total of 179 casualties, comprising 162 injured persons and 17 fatalities. There were 111 total recorded cases, with 14 categorized as fatal, 65 as serious, and 32 as minor incidents.”

He mentioned that the accidents involved 98 commercial vehicles, 69 privately owned vehicles, and two government-owned vehicles.

Emphasizing the goal of zero fatalities, he stated, “Accidents may occur due to various reasons such as environmental and mechanical errors, but the primary cause is often associated with human error.”

“Human error factors include exceeding recommended speed limits, failure to heed road signals and signs, lack of vehicle maintenance, insistence on driving despite poor road conditions, and driving under the age of 18,” he elaborated.

Farinloye urged parents to ensure that their children are mentally prepared, skilled, and possess a valid driver’s license before operating a vehicle.

The sector commander also warned against distracted driving caused by phone usage and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
