Violent Protests Spread in Senegal Leading to the Death of a Student in Clash with Police

The decision made by Senegal’s President, Macky Sall, to delay the country’s presidential elections has resulted in widespread violent protests throughout the West African nation.

According to NewsNow, President Macky Sall unilaterally postponed the presidential elections by several months last week, which were originally scheduled for February 25, 2023.

The president claimed that the postponement was necessary to resolve a dispute over the eligibility of presidential candidates competing for the country’s top position.

This development led to violent protests, with opponents accusing the president of undermining democracy.

On Friday, a student was killed in clashes with police in the northern city of Saint-Louis. The death of the student in Saint-Louis was confirmed by Khalifa Sall in a social media post.

He stated, “The hearts of all democrats are saddened by this eruption of clashes provoked by the unjustified halt of the electoral process.”
