Appeal from Defence Chief: Nigerians Urged to Have Faith in Our Armed Forces

In a recent address, Gen. Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, has emphasized the importance of trust in the Nigerian Armed Forces by the citizens.

Musa reiterates that the commitment of the Armed Forces to safeguarding the country’s democratic system and ensuring the security of lives and property should not be questioned.

Tragically, a group of individuals ambushed and killed 17 military personnel in the Okuama community of Delta State not long ago.

These soldiers had been on a peacekeeping mission when they were attacked and killed by angry youths on March 14.

The fallen soldiers were laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja on Wednesday.

Speaking at the conclusion of the Chief of Defence Staff Conference for Joint Task Force Commanders in Abuja on Thursday, Musa affirmed that the military’s existence is tied to the well-being of the people.

Musa expressed, “Have faith in your armed forces. The armed forces are dedicated to Nigeria. Our mission is to safeguard democracy, and we are committed to ensuring the complete safety and security of Nigeria.”

Musa mentioned that efforts are underway to work closely with the National Orientation Agency and other stakeholders to alter the citizens’ perception of the military.

He emphasized the necessity of citizens’ support in aiding the military to restore peace to the nation.

Musa emphasized, “We are collaborating with organizations like NOA to demonstrate to Nigerians that the Armed Forces are defenders of the nation. Our mission is to safeguard Nigerians, but given the challenges we face, we cannot overcome them alone. We require the collective support of all.”

In advising the commanders, the CDS stressed the importance of building and maintaining cooperative relationships with other security agencies.

He remarked, “The key takeaway from our discussions underscores the significance of collaboration and alliance. As commanders, it is essential to cultivate a culture of partnership and synchronization among our forces and across different operational zones. Let us revive and perpetuate the sense of unity within our respective task forces and integrate it into our operational routine.”

Moreover, he cautioned the commanders against overreliance on foreign aid to sustain their operations.

Musa stated, “Regarding funding, as deliberated during the recent meeting of Defence Ministers and Chiefs of Defence Staff of the Lake Chad basin, we must explore alternative avenues to maintain our operations and not be solely dependent on international benefactors.”
