Trump announces 10% tariffs starting February 1 on countries that have sent troops to Greenland

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has promised this Saturday to implement a wave of tariffs on European allies that have sent troops to Greenland. Trump has said that these tariffs will increase progressively and will not end until an agreement is reached for his country to purchase the territory.

In a publication in Truth Social, the American president has stated that the 10% tariffs will come into force from February 1 for Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland. Likewise, these tariffs will increase to 25% starting June 1 and will continue to increase until an agreement is reached for the United States to purchase the territory.

“World peace is at stake! China and Russia want Greenland, and Denmark can’t do anything about it,” he said. “We have subsidized Denmark, all the countries of the European Union and others for many years by not charging them tariffs. Now, after centuries, it is time for Denmark to return what it received,” said the tycoon.

No one will touch that sacred piece of land

In his opinion, “only the United States of America can participate in this game” and he has warned: “No one will touch that sacred piece of land.” According to Trump, “the national security of the world is at stake” and the aforementioned countries have traveled to Greenland “for unknown purposes.”

“These countries have put into play a level of risk that is neither sustainable nor defensible,” the US president continued. Therefore, it is “imperative” to take measures, with the aim of “protecting global peace and security,” he justified.

Leave the door open to an “immediate” negotiation

In his message, Trump has defended that the United States has been trying to make the transition for more than 150 years and that it has never been achieved because Denmark “has always refused”, but that at this time, the “need to acquire it is especially important.”

Finally, he has left the door open to an “immediate” negotiation with Denmark or with the countries that have put Greenland at risk. “Despite everything we have done for them for so many decades,” Trump lamented at the end of the statement.
