Thousands of people demonstrate in Denmark against Trump: "Hands off Greenland"

Thousands of people demonstrated this Saturday in the main cities of Denmark to protest the pressure from the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to achieve the annexation of Greenland.

“Now Nuuk” or “Hands off Greenland” are some of the slogans that could be read on the banners at the Nuuk rally, according to Danish public television, DR.

In mainland Denmark there are demonstrations in the capital Copenhagen, specifically in front of the city’s City Hall, and also in Aalborg, Kolding, Odense or Aarhus. The Copenhagen demonstration has brought together thousands of people and has covered the Town Hall square with Greenlandic flags and some of the Kalmar Union (yellow with a red cross) which refers to the short-lived union of Denmark, Sweden and Norway in the 14th century.

“Make America go away”

In Aarhus, also on mainland Denmark, people could read “Make America go away”, paraphrasing Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again”. In addition, slogans in Greenlandic and other slogans against the United States have been chanted.

In Kolding, Greenland flags and signs with phrases such as “Take your hands off Greenland” were seen and songs were sung in Greenlandic.

“It is absolutely incredible to see that so many people come to support us. I can’t hold back my tears,” said a spokesperson for the organizing organization, Uagut, Julie Rademacher. The association represents Greenlanders in Denmark.

“The latest events put pressure on Greenland and the Greenlanders, both in Greenland and Denmark. That is why we appeal for unity. When there are waves and we put ourselves on alert we risk generating more problems than solutions,” Rademacher warned.

The Hands Off Citizen Initiative of Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), Inuit (Joint Association of Greenlandic Local Associations in Denmark) and the NGO Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke also support the call.
