Tragic Incident at Police Checkpoint Leaves Officer Dead and Another Injured

Following an attack on a police checkpoint at Omata Junction, Nnewi-Oba Road, in the Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, two policemen were killed and injured, prompting the Anambra State Police Command to initiate a search for the culprits responsible for this heinous act.

Reports indicate that the assailants struck the area at 9:20 am on Friday, launching explosive devices at the officers manning the checkpoint.

The motive behind the attack remains unknown as of the time of this report.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the State Police Public Relations Officer, verified the incident in a statement issued on Friday.

Ikenga mentioned that the State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has instructed a thorough search for the gunmen behind the attack.

He stated, “The Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has ordered a search operation for the perpetrators of the 9:20 am attack on August 9, 2024, at the Omata Junction checkpoint along Nnewi Oba Road.

“The operation, led by the Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Nnewi Area Command, is collaborating with local residents to identify and apprehend the assailants.”

“During the confrontation with the police, one officer was fatally wounded by an explosive thrown by the gunmen, while another was seriously injured and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. Consequently, law enforcement has secured the area, with further updates to follow.”
