Tragic Death of Anambra Businessman While Watching Nigeria vs South Africa Match in Ivory Coast

Chief Osondu Nwoye, a prominent businessman from Anambra State, originally from Amanuke in Awka North Local Government Area but residing in Abidjan, tragically passed away while watching the Nigeria vs South Africa semifinal match on Wednesday.

Reports indicate that he died shortly after the Super Eagles of Nigeria had a second goal disallowed, resulting in a penalty for South Africa that led to an equalizer.

The news of his passing was shared via a post on social media by blogger Chukwudi Izuchukwu.

The post stated, “High Chief Osondu Nwoye was the wealthiest Igbo businessman based in Ivory Coast. However, while watching his beloved Super Eagles play in Ivory Coast, the match took an unexpected turn that cost him his life.”

“Just the previous day, High Chief Osondu was alive and well. He had traveled to Bouake, the city hosting the Super Eagles match, to support his favorite team.

“He was known for his passion for football and his patriotism towards his home country.

“According to eyewitnesses, the High Chief was jubilant when Victor Osimen scored the second goal, which was later nullified by VAR.

“The shock of witnessing the cancelled goal and the subsequent penalty awarded to South Africa may have been too much for his delicate heart, causing him to collapse inside the stadium.

“Despite efforts to revive him, he was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“While the nation celebrated, the Amanuike community in Anambra State mourned the loss of an illustrious individual, their wealthiest member who provided support and refuge to many in the community.

“During his lifetime, he held the title of Nwachinemelu of Amanuike.

“His immediate family is also mourning the loss of a friend, a father, and a benefactor.

“His tragic passing serves as a reminder for those battling underlying illnesses such as high blood pressure to abstain from watching high-stakes Super Eagles matches.

“In the end, it’s not worth the risk, as the late Chief was not the only one affected. Several others reportedly collapsed to their deaths while watching the match, including a youth corper serving in Adamawa.

“This sheds light on the darker side of football watching, a reality that is often overlooked.

“May their souls rest in peace.”
