Traditional worshippers declare a five-hour curfew in Osun, triggering response from CAN

In Ile-Ife, Osun State, the Christian Association of Nigeria leadership has expressed its concerns over a five-hour curfew imposed by followers of the Obatala deity. The curfew, set between 2pm and 7pm on Wednesday, was announced to facilitate the Oro procession passing through specific areas in Ile-Ife.

A statement issued by Oba Isoro O. Dada, the Obalesu Obatala Agbaiye, urged residents in the designated areas where the Oro procession would travel to adhere to the curfew for the benefit of the community.

Titled ‘Special announcement from the house of Obatala to all Muslims and residents in Ile-Ife,” Dada’s statement emphasized the importance of residents staying indoors during the Oro Owa-Ilare festival scheduled for Wednesday, March 27, 2024.

“The Oro procession is set to commence at 2pm and conclude by 7pm. We urge all residents in Ile-Ife living in the following areas to remain indoors: Igbotapa, Ajamopo, Gbodo, Ita Olopo, Oja-Ife, Ita Oranfe, Enuwa Square, Ooni Ilare, Sabo Road 7, and Olumogbe Street.

“It is essential for the residents in these listed areas to comply with this directive for the collective well-being of Ile-Ife.”

Over the years, there have been strained relations between Muslims and Oro adherents in Ile-Ife, leading to sporadic violent incidents.

In a separate development, on Thursday, March 30, 2023, an Imam named Abdullateef Adediran and five worshippers were injured during clashes with Oro adherents while gathering for prayers at Ilare Mosque in Ile-Ife.

Responding to the recent curfew announcement by the Obatala adherents, the Ile-Ife CAN chairman, Rev Canon Sam Onitiju, denounced the restriction of movement in Ile-Ife and emphasized the importance of religious tolerance.

Referring to a previous peace meeting involving religious leaders and the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Rev Canon Sam Onitiju highlighted the need for harmony and cautioned against impeding the movement of people during the day.

“In light of these discussions, we encourage Christians in Ifeland to participate in their Holy Week services without fear of intimidation or hostilities. We call upon law enforcement authorities to uphold peace in the town and prevent any disruptions during this period,” he stated.
