The elections in Venezuela have been the subject of controversy since they were held last July, after the announcement by the National Electoral Council (CNE) of the victory of Nicolás Maduro with 51.2% of the votes (5.1 million) and the opposition candidate, Edmundo González, in second place with 44.2% of the votes (4.4 million).

Maduro asked respect for the “popular will” during his first speech after the publication of the first results and highlighted the “security” and “transparency” of the Venezuelan electoral system while asking to respect “the Constitution, the public powers and the popular will.”

Meanwhile, opposition leaders They rejected the results and denounced electoral fraud. This was the case of María Corina Machado, leader of the Venezuelan opposition, who urged the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) to “enforce popular sovereignty.” In the opinion of the former deputy, the CNE announcement was “impossible”, since, according to the more than 40% of minutes received, González Urrutia obtained 70%, while the head of state – Machado indicated – 30%.

The Spanish Government does not recognize Maduro’s victory
