The teenager who set his girlfriend on fire in Lagos is remanded by the court for allegedly cheating on him

Remand Order: An 18-year-old suspected internet fraudster, Victor Oji, who set his 24-year-old girlfriend Tolani Mariam on fire in Iba Town, Ojo Lagos, was remanded on Tuesday by an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court.

 

The Magistrate, Mrs A. Kusanu, did not take the teenager’s plea, but ordered that he should be kept at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre, Lagos, pending advice from the state director of public prosecutions. The case was adjourned until Feb. 19.

 

According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Jimah Iseghede, the defendant committed the crime on Dec. 7, 2019, at 10.00a.m. at No. G549, Army Post Service Estate, Iba Town.

He mentioned that the defendant set his girlfriend ablaze because he suspected she was cheating on him, resulting in her death from the burns she suffered.

As per the prosecutor, the deceased told the defendant that she was going to visit her sister who was put to bed and later returned to the boyfriend after some days.

 

Iseghede stated that the defendant saw a video of the girlfriend in a hotel taking hard drugs on her phone, triggering his violent actions.

 

The prosecutor noted that the murder contravened Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, and carried the death penalty.
