The repercussions of the attack on Trump in Washington: "We will see greater securitization, internal purges and let's not rule out more lone wolves emerging"

US President Donald Trump was abruptly evacuated this Saturday from the traditional White House correspondents’ dinner after an armed man, who was intercepted and detained, tried to enter the event. The hundreds of attendees at the event, which included government senior staff, had to be evacuated.

Trump compares himself to Lincoln

Trump explained minutes later at a press conference at the White House that the attacker was a “crazy” and a “lone wolf” who did not breach the security perimeter where the president was dining accompanied by the first lady, Melania Trump, the vice president, JD Vance, and hundreds of journalists and members of the world of Washington politics.

Likewise, the president of the United States has also compared himself to Abraham Lincoln, who was assassinated in 1865 as the American Civil War was coming to an end: “I must tell you that the people who have had the most impact, who have done the most, if you look closely, people like Abraham Lincoln, if you look for the people who have gone through this, they went for them. The people who generate the greatest impact are the ones they go for. When you see the people who have experienced an attack, they are very shocking people; you only have to look at the names, they are the big names.

The repercussions of the attack

Eduardo Saldaña and David Gómez analyze in The World Order of Julia in the wave the repercussions that this attack will have, not only at the electoral level, but also within the Trump Administration itself. They explain that the president “plays a lot” with these types of statements “in the face of his voters.” In the end, “he is falling a lot in the polls and plays with messianism and the idea that the deep state does not like the changes they make and go against them.”

“The constant reference to Abraham Lincoln is not insignificant”

“The constant reference to Abraham Lincoln is not insignificant. “He permanently appeals to him because he is the great reference of the Republican Party and he wants to present himself as that continuator of Lincoln’s legacy, even though Lincoln’s Republican Party has nothing to do with Trump’s,” they say.

And the repercussions in the US? “It is likely that we will see greater securitization, which will be used as an excuse for internal purges. And let us not rule out that this activates other lone wolves because the United States has a long tradition of assassination attempts. The relevance of this attack is not so much what has happened and how, but how the Administration is going to react to it and how it can use it in a context in which we already saw a large securitization in the United States.”
