The reasons behind the sealing of a commercial bank as explained by the Kaduna state government

United Bank for Africa branches in Kaduna metropolis were sealed by the Kaduna Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) due to an alleged non-payment of N14.3 million in taxes.

Hajiya Aysha Ahmad, the Board Secretary/Legal Adviser of KADIRS, mentioned on Wednesday that the enforcement action was taken to ensure tax compliance across the state, specifically regarding withholding taxes and money agents.

Despite numerous demand notices sent to the bank, they refused to pay, leaving the authorities with no choice but to enforce the closure.

Ahmad expressed the service’s desire for voluntary tax compliance, expressing disappointment at the defaulter’s non-cooperative behavior.

Once the outstanding taxes are settled, the premises will be unsealed, she assured.

This enforcement is part of the efforts to reach the Kaduna State Government’s N120 billion revenue target, Ahmad added.

Emphasizing the importance of voluntary tax payment as a civic duty, Ahmad urged the residents of the state to comply willingly.

Addressing the legal proceedings with the bank, Ahmad explained, “We have been in communication with their consultant and Headquarters. Despite a favorable outcome at the tax appeal tribunal, they failed to comply with the court’s directives leading to the current enforcement.”
