The president of Mexico assures that "there has never been" a diplomatic crisis between Mexico and Spain

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has said that “there was never” a diplomatic crisis with Spain after the apology for the Conquest, and that the important thing is to recognize “the strength of the native peoples” for Mexico.

In brief statements upon arriving at the IV Meeting in Defense of Democracy, he spoke about the tensions between Spain and Mexico after the letter sent by the then president Andrés Manuel López Obrador to King Felipe VI demanding an apology for the excesses during the Conquest of America, in the 16th century.

“There is no diplomatic crisis. There never has been one. What is very important is that the strength of the native peoples for our homeland is recognized,” he responded when asked if he considers the clash with Spain over.

“Democracy implies freedom, but freedom is an empty word if it is not accompanied by social justice.”

During his speech at the summit, he offered that the next Meeting in Defense of Democracy be in Mexico and address “the economy focused on well-being and a democracy that responds to the true needs of the people”, an offer that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, thanked in his speech, calling for a date to be found for 2027.

Sheinbaum has made a plea for democracy and stated that it means “elevating love above hate, cultivating generosity instead of greed, brotherhood above war.”

“Democracy implies freedom, but freedom is an empty word if it is not accompanied by social justice, sovereignty and the dignity of the people. When we talk about democracy, it is not that of the elites. It is not that of the concentration of wealth, but that of distribution,” he concluded.
