The LP in Anambra State rejects the proposed LG elections by Soludo, opts for legal action

Labour Party (LP) in Anambra State has turned down the upcoming local government election set for September 28.

During the weekend, the party’s state working committee, in a press briefing, announced their decision to challenge the rushed amendments made to the state electoral laws by the House of Assembly, allegedly at the behest of Governor Prof Chukwuma Soludo.

According to the party, “The focus currently is on the impending Anambra State Local Government elections.”

They added, “With no budgetary allocation made by the State House of Assembly for the Council Election, we are surprised by the swift and continuous amendments to the State Electoral Law, sometimes stretching into late night hours.”

“The governor is being pressured to hold the LGA election before October 2024, or else risk the monthly Local Government Fund Allocations being diverted to a holding account as per the ruling of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”

After reviewing the amended Electoral Law, the party has decided to take legal action.

They stated, “We will take our grievances to the courts to challenge some of the unjust clauses in the hastily amended laws. As a party, we are preparing to participate in the election once all lawful procedures are followed, regardless of the ongoing legal challenges in court.”
