The lawsuit against NMCN and its Registrar by nurses explained by UGONSA

UGONSA, also known as GNAN, reaffirms its dedication to ensuring stability in the health sector, as the National Administrative Council, NAC, of University Graduates of Nursing Science Association.

Recently, Nigerian nurses took the NMCN’s Registrar/Secretary General, Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar, to court over a controversial circular on certificate verification guidelines.

Nigerian nurses challenge NMCN’s circular in court

In response to a letter from the National President of NANNM, Michael Nnachi Ekuma, UGONSA clarified that it did not support any action that could disrupt the progress or harmony within the nursing profession in Nigeria.

The association highlighted the widespread opposition from Nigerian nurses and midwives towards the circular, deeming it as ‘restrictive and arbitrary’.

UGONSA addressed the Registrar of NMCN through a formal letter, expressing concerns about the implications of the new verification policy on nurses and the profession as a whole.

Due to the Registrar’s lack of response and the swift implementation of the circular, UGONSA felt compelled to seek legal recourse by petitioning the Court to halt the circular’s enforcement pending internal resolution of the issues.

UGONSA defended their actions as a means to protect their members’ rights from potential infringement by the Council.

The association emphasized the need for constructive dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders to develop fair verification guidelines without hindering the progress of Nigerian nurses.

UGONSA called for a comprehensive consultation process to address concerns and reach a mutually acceptable resolution before withdrawing the lawsuit.
