The Hisbah Law in Yobe Assembly Gets Amendment, Roles of Executive Chair and State Commandant Defined


An amendment to the law establishing the Hisbah Commission in Yobe State has been passed by the State House of Assembly, aimed at defining the separate functions of the office of the Executive Chairman and the State Commandant of the Commission.

Following the adoption of the report on the amendment law by its standing committee on Justice and Religious Affairs, the House made the necessary amendments.

Chairing the committee, Hon Yakubu Suleiman elaborated that the amended law now includes provisions for the office of the State Commandant of the Hisbah Commission and outlines its functions.

According to the new provisions, the State Hisba Commandant is now required to operate under the directives of the Executive Chairman in supervising the activities of the Hisba Corps.

In explaining the significance of the amendment, the committee chairman highlighted that it will enhance the Commission’s effectiveness in fulfilling its duties.

In another development, the House has received the names of four nominees intended for confirmation as the Executive Chairman and permanent members of the Hisba Commission.

The nominees are Yahuza Hamza Abubakar as the Executive Chairman, alongside Sheikh Mohammed Mahdi, Alkasim A Damagum, and Mallam Lawan Abba Shettima as permanent members of the Commission.

During the session, the Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Chiroma Buba Mashio, referred the nominees’ names to the House committee on Justice and Religious Affairs for screening.

Previously, Governor Buni had signed a bill on October 6, 2023, establishing the Hisba Commission, which is tasked with monitoring the enforcement and implementation of Shariah law and combating social vices in the state.
