The China Chamber of Commerce in Abuja refutes claims of denying Nigerians entry to supermarket

In a statement released on Monday, Cui Guangzheng, the secretary of the China General Chamber of Commerce in Abuja, Nigeria, clarified that no Nigerian was prevented from accessing the Chinese Supermarket at Royal Choice Estate.

Operating within the estate, Royal Choice specializes in offering Chinese food and beverages under the auspices of the China General Chamber of Commerce.

The statement by Guangzheng comes in response to a viral video in which a resident alleged that Nigerians were being barred from entering the Chinese Supermarket.

In light of the accusation, the Nigerian government, represented by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), summoned the owners of the supermarket on Monday over allegations of discriminatory practices towards Nigerians.

The FCCPC further demanded that the supermarket present its Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) status report containing information on all directors and any pertinent lease agreements.

Contrary to the claims, Guangzheng emphasized that the supermarket has consistently upheld a policy of non-discrimination towards any individual.

He also restated the chamber’s dedication to fostering equality and inclusivity in its operations.

“The China Chamber of Commerce is just one of the businesses operating within the facility, and the supermarket in question is situated within the residential area of the estate,” Guangzheng stated.

“No instances of discrimination or refusal of entry to the estate or supermarket for grocery shopping, as commonly believed, have occurred.

“We sincerely regret any conflicts at the estate’s entrance involving security staff and a customer; such incidents do not represent the official stance of the estate management or the chamber of commerce.”
