Expert Debunks Myth: Breast Milk Not Effective in Treating Jaundice
In a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo, Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Funmi Adesokan refuted the notion that applying breast milk to the eyes of jaundiced babies can cure the condition.
Dr. Adesokan clarified that jaundice results from the excessive breakdown of red blood cells, leading to the production of bilirubin, a yellow pigment found in the liver.
She explained that jaundice manifests as a yellowish tint in the eyes, skin, and mucus membranes and emphasized that applying breast milk to the eyes does not impact this process and is ineffective in treating jaundice.
Dr. Adesokan also debunked the belief that herbal remedies like pawpaw water can cure jaundice, stating that there is no scientific evidence to support this claim.
