Teen pretends to be kidnapped to blackmail father in Jigawa

Authorities in Jigawa State apprehended an 18-year-old teenager, Safiyanu Lawan, for orchestrating a false kidnapping scheme to extort money from his own father.

The police spokesman, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, verified this information to NewsNow.

According to reports, the incident unfolded on 19/04/2024 around 1430hrs. Alhaji Lawan Dankoli from Kiyawa LGA reported to the State Intelligence Department (SID) Dutse that his son, Safiyanu Lawan, had gone out for school supplies but did not return.

Later that same day, at approximately 2320hrs, an anonymous caller contacted him multiple times from an unfamiliar number, claiming that Safiyanu had been kidnapped.

Upon receiving this distressing news, a team of Police officers attached to State Intelligence Department (SID) Dutse promptly launched an investigation and apprehended a 27-year-old man named Abdulrazak Salisu from Zango quarters, Kiyawa LGA, in connection with the case.

During questioning, the suspect disclosed that he was aware of Safiyanu’s whereabouts and had colluded with him to extort money from his father.

The police spokesperson mentioned that the team quickly located Safiyanu Lawan and took him into custody.

The investigation is currently ongoing, and the suspects will be prosecuted in court.
