‘Some parts of the country wrongly associate drugs and scams with wealth’ – Na’Allah

A former legislator, Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, has pointed fingers at a specific segment of the country for hindering Nigerians from traveling legally worldwide.

Having represented Kebbi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly for 16 years, Na’Allah expressed that this unnamed region mistakenly perceives drugs and scams as the sole pathways to riches.

In a recent social media post, the ex-lawmaker highlighted the mounting challenges faced by Nigerians in traveling legitimately across the globe, chiefly due to the actions of a minority of citizens, predominantly hailing from a particular region.

He elaborated, stating: “It’s increasingly arduous for Nigerians to engage in legitimate global travel owing to the actions of some citizens in the country, particularly from a specific region, who falsely believe that drugs and scams are the sole keys to prosperity.”

However, the post drew criticism from Nigerian journalist Jaafar Jaafar.

Jaafar expressed bewilderment at NaAllah’s intentions with the statement.

The journalist suggested that atrocities committed by Boko Haram and bandits have tarnished the image of Nigerians far more than drug-related activities.

He remarked: “I fail to comprehend Senator Bala Na’Allah’s objective with this tweet. Frankly, I’d prefer being likened to Escobar over Shekau.

“Boko Haram and banditry have inflicted greater damage on our reputation as Nigerians than drugs have. Following incidents like the underwear bomber, developed nations have intensified background checks on Nigerian travelers prior to granting visas. Some Nigerian travelers have been detained or subjected to thorough scrutiny due to name matches with individuals on terror watchlists. Nigeria has suffered losses in foreign investments and tourism earnings not from drug trafficking but due to terrorism.”
