Scotland leader Humza Yousaf steps down before facing no-confidence vote

On Monday, Scotland’s first minister, Humza Yousaf, announced his resignation as he opted not to engage in a no-confidence vote.

This decision follows his recent move to scrap a climate change target, which consequently put an end to a coalition with the Green Party.

Yousaf resigned after he was unable to secure an agreement with a nationalist party that could have provided him with a majority in Scotland’s devolved regional parliament.

The Scottish parliament is set to vote on motions of no confidence against Yousaf and his government later this week.

In a press statement, Yousaf stated: “After reflecting over the weekend on what would be most advantageous for my party, the government, and the nation I represent, I have determined that rebuilding political unity necessitates a change in leadership.”

He further added, “Therefore, I have communicated my decision to step down as the party leader to the SNP’s national secretary.”
