Samson Siasia Recounts Coaching the Nigeria U20 Team

Sharing insights on his coaching experience with the U20 team, former Nigeria international, Samson Siasia, reminisced about his successful tenure.

During his leadership, Siasia guided the team to victory at the African Youth Championship in 2005 and steered them to the final of the 2005 U-20 World Cup held in The Netherlands.

Additionally, he achieved Olympic silver and bronze medals with the U-23 team in 2008 and 2016 respectively.

Discussing on the ATHLST podcast, Siasia disclosed his personal contributions towards the growth and well-being of his players.

Reflecting on the challenges, Siasia remarked, “We faced significant hardships from Nigeria, believe me.”

“The Super Eagles are the most cooperative to coach, as they provide all the necessary support. However, coaching the Under 20 and even Under 16 teams is more demanding – basic necessities like food are scarce,” he added.

He went on to emphasize his commitment, stating, “I invested my own finances to ensure the welfare of these young athletes.

“I took care of their essential needs such as buying toothpaste, brushes, and even providing financial assistance, be it $100 when we traveled, all from my personal funds. They weren’t just representing Nigeria; they were playing for me.”
