FG’s Plan for a N100bn Police Housing Fund

In a recent statement, the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, disclosed that the Federal Government is set to establish a N100 billion Police Housing Fund.

At the inaugural Nigerian Police Housing Summit in Abuja, the IG unveiled this new initiative with the theme “Renewed Hope for Police Housing in Nigeria,” which took place at the Abuja Continental Hotel in the Federal Capital Territory.

During the summit, the police chief stressed the importance of prioritizing the welfare of police personnel, particularly in terms of housing availability both during and after their service.

Egbetokun acknowledged the significant housing shortage within the Nigerian Police Force, revealing that the current housing capacity only meets a fraction of the workforce’s needs, which stands at over 400,000 members.

He noted past initiatives by the force to address housing shortages, such as the establishment of the Nigerian Police Force Property Development and Construction Co Ltd and collaborations with state governments, government bodies, and private sector developers. However, he highlighted that these efforts have had minimal impact and emphasized the urgent need for a strategic reassessment.

The Nigerian Police Housing Summit 2024 aims to develop strategies for providing accessible and affordable housing to police officers and personnel. Egbetokun highlighted the launch of a N100 billion Police Housing Fund as a critical step towards meeting this goal and emphasized the importance of collaboration with key stakeholders.

He expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and the Honourable Minister of Housing, Ahmed Dangiwa, for their leadership in delivering affordable housing to Nigerians through the ‘Renewed Hope Cities’ initiative.
