Reversal of Accountant’s Dismissal by Delta Assembly 24 Years Later

After 24 years, the Delta State House of Assembly has decided to reverse the dismissal of an accountant, Mr. Emmanuel Emenetie, who was employed by the State Post Primary Education Board and allegedly terminated from his position.

Mr. Emenetie lodged a complaint with the House of Assembly on February 17, 2000, claiming that his employment termination by the Post Primary Education Board was unjust.

In his appeal, he requested to be reinstated as a Permanent Secretary at par with his colleagues, with retroactive financial benefits from the date of his dismissal.

He also sought compensation amounting to N4.8 million for the period he was unemployed.

In a recent session presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, the legislators unanimously agreed that Mr. Emenetie’s dismissal was unlawful and therefore should be reversed.

Consequently, the Assembly recommended that Mr. Emenetie be reimbursed with all outstanding salaries and benefits, starting from the date of his wrongful termination.

The Speaker commended the House Public Petitions Committee and instructed the House Clerk to inform relevant authorities of this resolution.

A section of the House resolution states, “He should receive other entitled benefits from the date of his wrongful termination to his current rank of Director and up to his projected retirement date.

“Mr. Emmanuel Emenetie should retire at the grade level of a Director. The Chairman of the Post Primary Education Board and the Delta State Head of Service are to ensure the House recommendations/directives, as outlined in paragraphs 1-3, are promptly implemented.”
