Abia State Retirees Finally Receive Long-awaited Pensions

Confirmation has been made by numerous pensioners in Abia State regarding the settlement of their outstanding pensions by the previous administrations in the State.

It has been disclosed by the Abia State government that these pension arrears were accumulated between 2014 and early 2023.

During an address made at the Christ The King Catholic Church (CKC) in Aba on Thursday, Governor Alex Otti assured the retirees, stating, “Some of you (Pensioners) have been waiting since 2014. By the close of today (Thursday, March 28, 2024), you will all be relieved. Please check your accounts by the end of business hours today.”

Earlier, Governor Otti had vowed to settle the backlog of pension arrears by the first quarter of 2024 during his speech to the people of Abia.

Subsequent investigations carried out by NewsNow on Thursday evening duly confirmed the disbursement of the pension funds by the State government.

Indicated by Mrs. Lucy Samuel Nne, Onyema Agbandu, and Kalu Ogbonna, a number of pensioners received bank notifications.

Expressing their gratitude, the retired beneficiaries thanked Governor Otti for honoring his electoral commitment.

The retirees criticized previous administrations in Abia, singling out the most recent past government for allegedly subjecting them to harsh treatment.

Despite repeated protests led by Emeka Okezie, Chairman of Concerned Abia Pensioners, against the previous state government, he was unavailable for comment at the time of this report.

On the other hand, a few pensioners disclosed to NewsNow on Thursday evening that they were still awaiting their own payment notifications.
