Protests Shake Port Harcourt Airport, Leading to Flight Disruptions

The Port Harcourt International Airport is currently experiencing disruptions in flight services due to protests staged by residents of Omagwa and Ipo communities in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. The protesters have blocked the entrance to the airport, demanding better amenities, particularly power supply.

The ongoing protest has significantly impacted airport operations, leaving many passengers stranded. Additionally, the situation has resulted in a traffic jam that extends from the Airport Road to nearby communities.

Individuals participating in the protest gathered as early as 7 am on Wednesday to express their grievances. They highlighted issues such as the lack of compensation despite enduring daily noise pollution from the airport and the absence of quality educational facilities in the area.

A protester named Oki voiced frustration over the neglect by airport authorities, stating, “Residents of Omagwa and Ipo have been without electricity for over a decade. We seek redress for the noise pollution emanating from the airport on a daily basis. We have reached a breaking point, which brought us here today.”
