Protest in Edo Communities Alleging Plan to Withdraw Security Personnel

Allegations of a plan to remove security personnel deployed by the state government have sparked protests in over twenty-two communities in Nikorogha, Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State.

The residents, predominantly Ijaw-speaking, expressed that the presence of security personnel has significantly improved the living conditions in their communities.

During the protest, the demonstrators, carrying placards with messages like “Come to our aid Mr. Governor” and “We need peace for our businesses in Nikorogha,” voiced concerns about rising incidents of armed robbery and assaults on women.

Chairman of Nikorogha community, Friday Benson, urged Governor Godwin Obaseki to maintain and reinforce the security presence in their area.

He lauded the governor for his efforts in promoting peace and security, as well as for initiating road construction projects connecting the communities.

In a statement to the press, Benson emphasized the importance of preserving the current security measures: “We appreciate the improved security conditions over the past year and a half. The enhanced security presence, especially with special forces at Mile 3, has effectively curbed criminal activities in our area.”

Additionally, Philip Polo, the Chairman of the Elders Council, called for further deployment of security personnel while expressing gratitude for the ongoing road infrastructure developments in Nikorogha.
