Police in Kano make 54 arrests connected to alleged plan to attack residents

With the aim of disrupting the ongoing Sallah festivities across various areas in the state, the Kano State Police Command has apprehended 54 individuals, according to the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Usaini Gumel, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Kano on Thursday.

The suspects were found with an assortment of dangerous weapons, cannabis, motorcycles, and other items. Authorities have received intelligence reports indicating that certain youths, posing as supporters of prominent politicians in the state, were plotting to disrupt the Durbar event organized by the Kano Emirate by donning political attire. This irresponsible behavior could provoke conflicts and result in a breakdown of law and order.

The Commissioner emphasized that the Sallah Durbar should not be politicized, and any attempts to introduce political elements such as party symbols, clothing, billboards, or posters are unacceptable and could incite disorder. He urged politicians to advise their followers to view the Sallah celebration as a time for unity and tradition.

The suspects, eager to act during the first day of Sallah, have been detained in the five Emirates of Kano State to prevent criminal activities. The police have heightened efforts to target identified criminal hideouts and are warning potential wrongdoers to heed the caution.
