Police confirm charges for Delta lady accused of infanticide after dumping baby in well

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, has verified the arrest of a 24-year-old woman accused of dumping her one-and-a-half-year-old baby in a well, facing charges of infanticide.

The suspect, Sofia Nkwor, hailing from Nsien in Ndokwa East LGA, allegedly committed the offense on April 28, 2024, along a road in Araya community, Isoko South Local Government Area.

Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police stated that the case was reported at Oleh Police Division in Isoko South LGA. He further informed that the suspect is currently in custody, with investigations ongoing.

According to authorities, the abandoned child was discovered floating in the well by children playing near a tree, leading to the alarm being raised.

During her interrogation, Sofia disclosed that she disposed of the baby named Destiny in the well on April 26, 2024.

“The father abandoned me after denying the baby, and my grandmother, with whom I was residing, also abandoned me.

“As a farmer, the baby was hindering my work in the farm. I was in a distressed state when I committed the act. Despite caring for the baby, I felt helpless and alone. It was only after being apprehended by the vigilante and handed over to the police that I realized the gravity of my actions,” Sofia explained.
