Plans for Regional Development with South East Development Commission Ensued by Governors – Ohanaeze

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, stated on Wednesday that Southeast governors are committed to utilizing the Southeast Development Commission (SEDC) for the advancement of the region.

Co-sponsored by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, the SEDC bill covers the states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo.

The SEDC’s mandate includes managing funds from the Federation Account to address infrastructure deficits, particularly in road reconstruction and rehabilitation, resulting from the long-standing neglect of the Southeast region.

In addition, the SEDC will address ecological issues and environmental challenges that have plagued the Southeast for many years.

A statement from Alex Ogbonnia, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, mentioned that “Southeast governors, under the leadership of Senator Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, will utilize the Commission to implement programs that promote industrial, agricultural, tourism, energy, commercial, and investment potentials in the region. It will also facilitate the establishment of a coordinated security infrastructure in the area.”

Recently, Minister of Works, Senator David Nweze Umahi, disclosed plans for the construction of a 477-kilometer six-lane Super Highway connecting five states to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

This super highway will pass through Abakiliki, Enugu, Nsukka, and onward to Abuja, as stated by the Minister.

Chief Engr. Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, expressed appreciation to the President for these initiatives.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has consistently highlighted Igbophobia as a major factor hindering Nigeria’s progress, attributing it to a deep-seated fear of the Igbo people within a nation where they have made significant contributions.

The recent actions by President Bola Tinubu, including signing the SEDC Bill into Law and appointing Senator Dave Nweze Umahi as Minister of Works and Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla as Chief of the Naval Staff, signal a positive shift from the previous administration.

These developments are viewed as a significant leap forward and a fresh start in the region.
