Peter Obi’s Commitment to Philanthropy Across Religious Lines

Addressing speculation, the campaign organization of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, clarified on Friday that his visits to churches and mosques are not motivated by political gains for the upcoming 2027 election.

Recently, the former Anambra State governor faced criticism for his appearances during the Ramadan season, where he joined in Iftar celebrations at various mosques with Muslim communities.

Iftar is the evening meal during Ramadan that breaks the day’s fast.

In a statement released in Abuja, Yunusa Tanko, the chief spokesperson for Obi’s presidential campaign, emphasized that Obi’s charitable actions extend beyond the realms of politics and religion.

Tanko denounced the unfounded allegations as an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the LP presidential candidate.

Tanko stated, “Obi’s visits to places of worship stem from his desire to assist the less fortunate and are not part of any political agenda. During these visits, he shares messages of encouragement to uplift those in need. He refrains from engaging in political discussions, criticism, or derogatory remarks.”

“For example, during Ramadan, Obi visited prayer centers in both the North and South, joining in the breaking of the fast with Muslim adherents, providing donations to alleviate their hardships, and facilitating access to essentials like clean water in various communities.”
