Panic ensues in Anambra as security forces clash with ESN, IPOB members

An atmosphere of chaos engulfed the Issieke community and its surroundings in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State on Tuesday, as intense gunfire erupted between security forces and individuals believed to be associated with the Eastern Security Network and Indigenous People of Biafra.

Witnesses in the community reported that the gunshots, which commenced in the early hours, led to panic and fear among residents, resulting in people staying indoors and traders avoiding markets and other public areas due to concerns about stray bullets.

While the extent of casualties is still unknown, there are reports of some villagers sustaining injuries as they scrambled to avoid stray bullets by seeking refuge in their homes.

A community leader in the area who spoke to our correspondent via phone stated, “The gunfire started during the night when masked security personnel descended on the area.

“The exact reason for the gunfire is unclear, but based on gathered information, it appears that security forces are conducting a raid on suspected criminal hideouts in the vicinity, a situation that often leads to confrontations.

“As of now, the gunfire continues, and residents are confined indoors. It is suspected to be a clash between the alleged ESN members and security forces. Any casualties are currently unconfirmed.”

Upon contact, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, acknowledged the incident but assured that the situation was being managed.

Ikenga affirmed, “The situation is being managed as joint security operations are ongoing at Issieke community in Ihiala LGA. The combined security teams have targeted criminal elements and hideouts linked to ESN and IPOB members in the area.

“The operation is still in progress with no reported casualties. Individuals needn’t panic as the focus is solely on the criminal hideouts. More information will follow shortly.”

Separately, suspected cultists have fatally shot three individuals at various locations in Awka, the state capital, including Ukwuorji, St. Faith Cathedral vicinity near Eke Awka Market, and Amawbia areas.
