According to Seun Kuti, Africans were the originators of daily bathing for Europeans
It is claimed by Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti that Africans were the ones who taught Europeans the importance of daily bathing. Kuti, speaking on the 'Fresh Off The Boat' podcast through Skype, mentioned that prior to African influence, Queen Elizabeth I would only bathe once a month in an attempt to set an example for her subjects.
In his words, Kuti stated that the concept of the first bathhouses originated in Africa, and many Africans are unaware of the fact that they were the pioneers of the idea that led to Europeans adopting daily bathing routines.
Referring to historical practices, he added: “Queen Elizabeth’s grandmother, Elizabeth I, then started bathing once a month as an example to her people to become tidy and clean.”
