US Sec. Of State Mike Pompeo refuses Iraqi Prime Minister's request for US troop withdrawal from Iraq
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has declined the request of Iraqi Prime Minister to initiate plans for the withdrawal of US military troops from Iraq, which came in response to the US drone strike that resulted in the death of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani on Iraqi soil.
The Iraqi Prime Minister, Adel Abdul-Mahdi, conveyed his request to Pompeo during a telephone conversation on Thursday night. He also expressed his disapproval of the US strikes in Iraq, citing them as a breach of Iraqi sovereignty and a violation of the existing security agreements between the two nations.
In the call, Abdul-Mahdi urged Pompeo to send representatives to Iraq in order to prepare a mechanism to implement the parliament's resolution regarding the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country.
