Overwhelming Number of Nigerians Abroad Registering for Evacuation due to COVID-19 – Diaspora Commission Reports

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission NIDCOM has noted that a large number of Nigerians residing in the United Kingdom, United States, China, and West Africa have been enrolling with the Nigerian missions for evacuation to Nigeria in the wake of the global Coronavirus pandemic.

Last week, the Federal government announced that all Nigerian Embassies have been directed to compile the names of Nigerians interested in being evacuated to Nigeria. The directive outlined that those who wish to be evacuated must be willing to cover their flight costs and adhere to a mandatory 14-day isolation period upon arrival in Nigeria.

Speaking to Punch, the spokesperson of NIDCOM, Abdul-Rahman Balogun, stated that numerous Nigerians have been sending inquiries on the evacuation process.

“Nigerians are responding overwhelmingly from China, UK, US, and also from West Africa. We can’t quote a figure because the registration is still ongoing. A lot of people have been sending emails to us. The response has been overwhelming. Some said they were ready to be quarantined on their return to the country; they are ready to pay for the evacuation. Some also have their air tickets but they could not come before the lockdown order was implemented.” he said

The Nigerian Embassy in the US issued a letter on Sunday, April 5, to all Nigerians residing in the US, announcing that it had commenced compiling names of Nigerians willing to return home. See a copy of the letter below
