Desperate Plea from Over 100 Death Row Prisoners in Kano Correctional Centres

A request for clemency has been made by more than 100 inmates facing the Death Row residing in Kano State Correctional Centres. The plea was directed towards the Kano State Government and the Committee of Propagative of Mercy.

Musbahu Lawan Kofar Mata, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano Correctional Center, disclosed in a statement that Suleiman Inuwa, the Controller of Correctional Centers, has already submitted a list of prisoners who have formally sought clemency to the committee.

During a visit by the Prerogative of Mercy Committee to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Janguzu, Kano, the Controller presented the lists of inmates seeking clemency to Hajiya Azumi Namadi Bebeji, the Chairperson of the Kano State Prerogative of Mercy Committee.

The list included inmates on Death Row (IDR), those serving life sentences, and individuals serving long terms, as well as inmates facing serious medical issues and elderly prisoners from the state.

Bebeji, the Chairperson, assured the inmates that the government would evaluate their situations based on their conduct and contributions during their time in custody, as recommended by the Correctional Service.

Bebeji commended inmates who have memorized the Holy Quran and acknowledged the exceptional academic achievements of some prisoners who scored 9 credits in the National Examination Council (NECO) and (NBIS) and are aspiring to enroll in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

She urged all inmates to adhere to the rules of the Custodial Centre and strive to make positive contributions to both themselves and society.
