Opposition to Establishment of Cattle Ranch in Enugu by World Igbo Congress

In Enugu State, plans to set up a cattle ranch have faced opposition from the World Igbo Congress (WIC) and the American Veterans of Igbo Descent.

Caution was advised by WIC to the Enugu State government, highlighting that the concept of cattle ranching, viewed as a private business, does not resonate with Igbo principles.

Expressing concerns, the groups cautioned that the consequences of introducing a cattle ranch in the state could be severe.

Under the title ‘Concerns Regarding the Establishment of a Cattle Ranch in Enugu State’, a statement was released jointly by WIC and AVID, directed at Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State.

In their statement, they commended Governor Peter Mbah’s dedication and leadership in Enugu State. However, they raised objections towards the proposed establishment of a cattle ranch in the state, prompting their collaborative communication.

Referencing a previous unsuccessful program by former Governor Orji Uzo Kalu of Abia State, they advised exercising caution based on that experience to avoid disappointment.

Citing troubling reports of over 80 casualties near the Lokpanta cattle market, presumed to be Igbo natives, they reiterated their reservations. They emphasized that cattle ranching, being a private enterprise, clashes with the values of Igbo traditional norms.

Highlighting the perceived association of cattle herders with violence and disorder, they stressed the importance the Igbo community places on equality and freedom within democratic setups. The possible establishment of a cattle ranch was cautioned against as it might lead to significant repercussions, endangering the autonomy and resilience of their community.

Encouraging prudent decision-making to safeguard their homeland from potential disguised threats in the guise of ranching activities, AVID and WIC offered collaborative support. They underscored their role as custodians of Igbo heritage, urging the protection of every inch of their ancestral land from external influences.

Emphasizing the lack of allocated land for Igbo settlements or businesses in any part of Nigeria, they pointed out the vast expanse of suitable ranching land in northern regions. They recommended a focus on essential governance priorities such as education, infrastructure development, power supply reliability, and poverty alleviation for the welfare of Enugu State residents.
